AVOIDING JAMS
Could anyone advise. I live in Gamlingay and work in Hampstead (NW3). What should be 1hr15 min drive has taken me 2hrs and 30 to 45 mins. I have been leaving at 7am to arrive for 9am. Is there an advised time to leave in order to not only avoid quite heavy A1 traffic but the worst part which is the A41 massively heavy North London traffic.
New in my job and do not want to get into trouble.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: AVOIDING JAMS
Emmajane: when we first moved up to Sandy, I worked in Harrow and my husband in Borehamwood. We used to leave home around 6am and I would generally be at work, having dropped off my husband along the way, between 7 and 730. It makes for quite a long day, although we both worked flexi, so we could leave before the traffic got heavy going home, but I found that the stress-free drive to work more than made up for the length of the day. (The other alternative is to retire - as we both have - but I'm guessing you're prolly a bit young for that) ;)

Keep Moving Program - comments
This has the potential to be a very useful site.
Suggested Improvements:
1. Showing a map of the route
2. Enabling a route to be altered by clicking on a map - see ViaMichelin - rather than junction listings, which are great if you know the route well.
3. Showing on a map the route (or a roadlisting) when right clicking the route name. I created a few alternative routes some time ago for the same journey but could only find the Keep Moving Program - comments and end postcodes from the route name.
4. When deleting a route, the return journey is also deleted.
Keep up the good work. It is really helpful to know the likely delays on a long journey - especially if one uses the M25 or M1!

Keep Moving better than the Highways Agency website..
Highways think the delays around the A303 Countess Roundabout at junction with the A345 are less than 10mins so don't show up on their map at all and don't show up on a default road search. Useless... I will be bookmarking Keep Moving and using this site in future.
Oh an extra bit of detail is that they are now running contra flow east and west of that roundabout (and contra flow around the roundabout even) with the other lane closed and being re-surfaced. Currently Westbound being resurfaced and the Eastbound being used.
They have also closed the access to and from the A345 at the Countess roundabout and diverson signs are in place.

site doesn't work properly
only found this site recently and thought what a useful idea but unfortunately doesn't work properly, setting up routes is confusing (tells me I haven't set up a prime route whatever that is ), and alerts are not sending me a text message. Even this Discussion forum is confusing, a lot of people seem to be reporting traffic issues on it - so is this a forum to discuss issues and ideas for the site or is somewhere to report traffic issues - who knows ?
I do hate sites that treat their users as guinea pigs - why don't you get this site properly tested and working before you inflict on your users ?

Route Alerts
Good news for all those experiencing problems with the route alerts system over the past few weeks.
We have now resolved the issues which were preventing users from setting up new routes, so that functionality should now have been restored.
There are a few problems still outstanding with the facility which allows suggested routes to be modified, but it is hoped that those will be resolved shortly, and we hope to be able to make another announcement concerning that soon

Why I haven't seen that website before? You're doing great job giving us the opportunity to see road conditions live from cameras. Shame that "alerts" hasn't been fixed yet. Re: Changing Route Directions.
Unfortunately, licensing restrictions mean we can't offer the routes back to you for review after they've been set up. The best option would be to delete the existing route and enter a new one to replace it. Sorry it's a bit of a faff, but the conditions of the licence mean we're not allowed to offer a full routing facility on this site.

Re: m1 closed
Hi Rob,
I can confirm that our records show the M1 Southbound was closed from J29-J28 because of an accident on Saturday 27th November between 03:28 and 06:37.
This caused delays in excess of 30 minutes to build up back to J30, with peak delays occurring at around 07:15.
Hope that helps!

Re: Non Existent A6020 Is Closed
Hi there,
As mentioned in an earlier reply, we are currently limited by the number of available location codes which drive our automated services, which means we have to target the busiest routes.
The A6020 in Derbyshire only attracts a flow of less than 3500 vehicles a day, so it hasn’t been a priority for our coverage before now.
However, we are planning to roll out our coverage across all A-roads nationwide in the next release of location codes, which should be during the course of the next year

It's easy to rant and rave about things but I have to say that after a year of using this site - it is utterly useless! I'm amazed it's still going...

Tell me how it's not your fault again.......

Re: da de dumm
I do apologies for the fact that the service provided by us has obviously not met your expectations.
I have run checks on all site content, both journalistic and delay reports, and all are currently up to date. I am also not aware of any interruptions to the service occurring around the time of your comment.
Two things which may have made this incident difficult to find; first a closure of the QE2 Bridge is not considered to be a complete closure of the road, as traffic diverts via one of the bores of the Dartford Tunnel. Therefore, this is equivalent of reduction of capacity from four lanes to two and so would be reported as a lane closure message.
Additionally, the bridge does not strictly form part of the M25; the Dratford Crossing has its own number allocated - the A282 - so that non-motorway traffic can use the crossing.
It is always worth checking under both road numbers for journeys which use either the bridge or tunnels to make sure all reports have been found.

Re: CCTV cameras
This question has been answered previously, but it is worth repeating.
If you zoom in the map very close to the location you are interested in, the pink spot denoting the camera location will be shown offset to one side of the carriageway to indicate its exact position.
If no offset is shown, than either the detailed positioning of the camera is not known to us, or it may be fixed in the central reservation.
Hope that clarifies!

Hi Robert,
Unlike the previous answer, this doesn't seem to be a problem with how the road has been coded, the issue seems to be with how the stripmap has been created.

Re: A442 closed
Hi there
All the information on KeepMoving comes from the same database that drives our phone service and TMC (SatNav) information. These services are fully automated and use a table of route locations to plot incident reports.
Up until now, restrictions on the number of allowable locations for the broadcast services have meant that these have been limited to cover only the busiest routes.
North of Telford, the A442 only attracts a flow less than 5000 vehicles a day, so it hasn’t been a priority for our coverage before now.
However, we are planning to roll out our coverage across all A-roads nationwide in the next release of location codes, which should be during the course of the next year.

Using the hard shoulder to jump a queue.
I have just been stuck on the M1 northbound between junctions 4 and 5 where everyone was diverted off the motorway for nearly 2 hours not 34 minutes as your information has it.
I can only presume that the 34 minute delay applies to the low lifes who race up the hard shoulder to jump the queue and make the delay even worse for the rest of us. My sincere hope for them is that they get fined, have their cars crushed and rot in hell.
I better go back and write rant instead of comment

I've checked back on our historic data records for this road, and these show detected speeds were fluctuating between 14mph and 22mph at around the times you were checking. The lowest recorded speeds may have been enough to trigger a delay alert, but probably the overall delay wouldn't have been significantly worse than a normal Friday evening.

Re: Email Alerts
Hi Dave
The reason is that alerts are only sent out when congestion is detected on the route. At 05:45 it is unlikely that many queues would have built up, so the chance of a mail needing to be sent is slim. It would be much more likely that there would be queues present in late afternoon. The idea is to avoid sending 'all clear' messages which slow down the process.
Hope that explains things!

Severe weather
As a newish HGV trucker on artics, I trunk across the Thelwall viaduct at night with a high sided trailer, Known as a double decker. What is the wind speed criteria for closing this part of the motorway? It would be useful to be aware so that a divert across the Runcorn Widnes bridge could be taken.

Re: Severe weather
Hi Robert,
According to the Highways Agency Website: 'When gusts of wind reach speeds of between 35mph and 44mph then advisory 50mph speeds are set on the matrix signals, supplemented by VMS messages. Where speeds are measured and are in excess of 60mph, then the RCC duty manager is consulted, and a decision on whether to close the bridge is made'. These criteria apply to both Thelwall (M6) and Barton (M60) bridges. Note though that on the last occasion when very strong winds affected the region, Runcorn-Widnes bridge was also closed.
There's more detail at: http://www.highways.gov.uk/business/28643.aspx
Hope that helps!

Highways agency blocking cameras
I believe the highways agency is now preventing us (the road tax payers) from seeing the cameras. Is this true or is it just me? Every camera I look for in the Midlands area says unavailable.

Re: Highways agency blocking cameras
Hi Alun,
All cameras on the M6 between J7 and Hilton Park are currently unavailable to us while the long-term roadworks for the upgrade to managed motorways are in progress.
You should still be able to access the others around the region, depending on any maintenance work which may take place.

Re: Cameras
Hi Spider,
If you zoom in very close on the map view, we have attempted to indicate the exact position of the cameras by offsetting the icon slightly to one side of the carriageway or the other. However, a number of the cameras on this stretch are directly over the central reservation.
Hope that helps!

Fuel prices and links.
There are still links to and mention of fuel price information on your site and I have wasted my time looking for it.
I've had to scroll down this forum to find that you no longer supply fuel information, but that was last year.
Please remove all mentions of fuel prices and the associated links via the cheap tab from your site - they just go back to the route page - to save others wasting time.

Also an announcement on the home page.
Thanks.

What Happened to this Service Yesterday?
This service was reporting a 20 minute delay on the southbound M23 yesterday evening. The M23 was closed and all surrounding roads were gridlocked! I spent an EXTRA 1.5 hours getting past this incident but no special incident report on this service. All the radio stations were reporting the incident (overturned lorry shed a load of breeze blocks across all three lanes at 3:30 in the afternoon) so why not this service? Was everyone off sick?
Can anyone recommend another service that actually reports major traffic incidents? This was a real waste of money the number of times I rang and go no information.

Re: What Happened to this Service Yesterday?
Hi Mary,
Thanks for your feedback on this incident and first let me apologise for the fact that you were obviously let down by how the service performed on this occasion.
We were reporting this accident right through from 3.20pm until 9.40pm; however there seems to have been a problem with the software that works out the placement of messages on the phone-line; the system seems to have interpreted the closure as affecting the the link to the airport from J9 rather than the main motorway from J8 to J9. This meant that none of the recorded announcements had any incident in place to 'attach' to and so be played out on the service.
We were reporting significant delays on the M23 from before 4pm until after 6.30. After that time the motorway was still closed, but traffic was finding alternative routes. When all goes well, we do emphasise on the service that the delay reported on the phone-line is only the delay approaching the closure; any delays on the diversion are on top of that fi

Delay not showing
Why is the A4 eastbound into London between J3 and J2 showing as no delays when it is read on Google Maps, showing as a delay on TrafficMaster and on the Highways Agency site? Local reports sound like there really is/has been a delay there but it's not shown on here at all :-(

Re: Delay not showing
Hi there,
Not sure if you're referring to the A4 or M4; these routes run very closely parallel in any case, with one stacked above the other approaching the end of the Chiswick Flyover
Checking back with our historic data records, we were reporting a 10 minute delay on this stretch of the M4 at around 09:20, but this gradually decays away with no delay being reported after 09:40.
The A4 was reporting speeds consistently around 20mph between Gillette Corner and the Chiswick Roundabout at about the same time, but this would not result in a significant delay above normal. Generally, we would not report a delay of less than 3 minutes on this site.
Bear in mind also that some free websites report data which is slightly delayed, so direct comparisons cannot always be made between different sites' reports.
Hope this helps answer your question.

Hay Every one,
every day I have to travel to and from Rochford to Barking for work, now I wouldn't mind if it took me 35mins like the route planner say's it will, but it never does...
if its not the A13 london bound thats chocker in the morning, its the A127 just before the basildon junction.. It backs up there for No apparent reason, the lanes dont get smaller an there's no road works so WHY does this happen and it only seems to be between 5.30pm and 6.30pm as I traveled doen the same road 35 mins later and it's clear as a bell... It just confuses me some thing chronic...
add's 25mins to my journey home for NOTHING.... OMG why does this happen.....

Setting up an alternative route
Morning.
Setting up an alternative routeing a new job Monday, so thought I'd try out this service...
I'm going from Blackpool to Oldham daily, and have set up the standard route via the M61. I'd like to set up a seperate route via the M65 J5 and onto the M66, but when I try to set up an alternative route and add a point on the way, it returns an invalid link message.
Also, whaere do I find the fuel price service?

Have to say, this process would be much simpler with a map to look at.

Hi,
Regarding the fuel prices, I was looking further down the screen and it appears to have been pulled.
It is confusing though as there is a link on the cheap food page (this will probebly be cleaned up in a houskeeping schedule) :) . However the supermarket idea is a good place to try as most supermarkets are much cheaper than service stations for fuel.

Wrong Location
The reported fallen tree is at Honingham not New Costessey. Why cannot a proper location be entered for this. There is no available location to choose on this site on the A47 between North Tuddenham and New Costessey yet there are 3 other locations between these points — Hockering, Honingham and Easton, over a number of miles. There is little point in reporting an incident if the correct location cannot be given. If you look on Google maps the distance between the two available points it is 9.8 miles
Also why is there just either Eastbound or Westbound to select and not an option for both ways. If there is an accident on a single carriageway road it is normally blocked both ways?

Re: Wrong Location
Sorry Mike, missed your update!
When originally designing the site we were concerned about allowing a 'both ways' option in case longer routes became too cluttered with multiple messages. We also suspected that most users would want to access the information before making a specific journey, so would only be interested in one direction of travel.
However, it is something we could consider, we are also looking at how best to show incidents which do affect both directions of travel.
Thanks for your comments

Re: Wrong Location
Dear Admin,
I think the page is simply not designed well.
Its not easy to navigate to find information required.
Why not to add a special tab with all the infolines and with description which one is which?
Route planner - if you dont accept a default route - to edit your own is a nightmare. You must already know all the junctions - not very handy when you want to check a road condition in unknown area - or on a longer distances with many changes.
As well as the result - to see them on a map could help to find an alternative road.
I would love to see a traffic info on a scalable, google-style map, rather than editing and storing my rotes. Just a quick look and you know what you can expect.
Hope that helps
xx

Re: Wrong Location
Hi Mike,
All the information on KeepMoving comes from the same database that drives our phone service and TMC (SatNav) information. These services are fully automated and use a table of route locations to plot incident reports.
Restrictions on the number of allowable locations for the broadcast services mean these are limited to where numbered roads intersect. In the case of the A47, there are no such intersections between North Tuddenham and New Costessey.
Incidents are normally located between two points, rather than at a given location; which works fine in the majority of cases as it is more important for routing to identify the affected link than the exact location.
We are working on a system which can identify how far down a link an obstruction occurs, but this will have to await a future upgrade to the system.
Hope that helps

Re: which number?
Hi Cheshire Cat!
Most of these numbers are just different 'gateways' to the same information; 401100 is KeepMoving's 'own brand', other services may carry different brandings; 64644 for instance carries the RAC's branding. These numbers are available across all mobile networks. You can also access the info from a landline by dialling 09003-401100.
Some mobile phone companies also operate their own-branded lines: Vodafone customers can call 2222, for T-Mobile the number is 2020.
All of these services operate on premium-rate lines. The subscription-based service which used to operate on 0845-TRAFFIC has now been discontinued.
Hope that clarifies things!

Re: How to avoid route showing motorways
Hi Causeway,
As you will have seen, there isn't an option to 'avoid motorways' on our routing function, and for long journeys this may not be practical. However, if your journey is relatively short, you may be able to force the route off the motorway by choosing a link on a parallel A-Road as an alternative (although we do seem to be getting a number of errors on the 'via' function as well at the moment, which we are investigating).
Try it out and if you're still having problems do get back to us.

Re: ROUTE ALERTS
Hi moz,
We're not aware of any current problems with the service; it is of course possible that the queues were not significant enough to produce a mail at the time it was due and had worsened significantly by the time you were driving. Other than that if you are fairly certain that the mails have stopped altogether I can only suggest re-entering the route or a similar one to make a comparison.
Sorry not to be able to offer anything more positive at the moment; we will continue monitoring the output to see if any problems do come to light

Personal Routes
Good news,
After a complete re-vamp we are very please to announce the return of our personal routes service, which can be set up via the 'Alerts' tab at the top of the page.
Enter the relevant Personal Routes and destination postcodes, confirm the details of your preferred route, and the latest info for this journey will automatically appear on your home page.
This then allows you to set up e-mail alerts which can be sent to you at time most convenient for you.
If you've not tried out this functionality before why not have a go; you need never again be caught out by unexpected delays on your way home!

Re: Personal Routes
Hi Pete,
One of the changes to the service recently introduced is that we now only send out a mail when a delay has been detected on the route. The reason for this is to reduce the overall numbers of mails we send out and so make the service faster, also to avoid filling up your inbox with mails which don't include any useful info.
Do let us know if you think we're not passing on details of any significant delays you meet on your routes.
Hope that helps!

E-mail Alerts
Good news for everyone who was asking about the e-mail alerts service.
This has now been restored and you should E-mail Alerts to receive alerts automatically. There is one major change the service however; we will now only send out an alert when there is something to pass on, so your mailbox won't get cluttered up with messages reporting no problems.
If you are relatively new to the site and haven't use the service before, click on the 'Alerts' tab above to set up reports for any route you use regularly. Regular users may want to check their setup to make sure you receive any messages at the time that's best for you.
As always, we are more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the service via these boards.

No Mention of delays
In addition to lengthy delays not being mentioned, thereby causing a missed meeting, all comments appear of a negative nature! So; being unable to find anything positive on this site any more, I intend to delete it from my bookmarks and rely on the good old BBC traffic reports instead. What a complete waste of time this site is!!!!!!

Re: Traffic Alerts
To reply to some of the points which have been coming up regularly on the boards:
We are aware that there have been significant ongoing problems with the e-mail alert service for which we can only apologise. Investigations are continuing into this and we hope to have an update on progress soon. Rest assured we will advise you as soon as we have anything positive to report.
Not such good news on the fuel price info though. We are no longer able to provide this service for reasons which are not under our control, and we do regret any inconvenience caused by this. However the site will continue to offer up-to-date traffic information, access to traffic cameras across the motorway network as well as a place to air your views on any and all traffic-related issues.

Re: Price of access
Hi rayand,
The most accurate and detailed Precision Traffic information is available on the 2222 service; this is only available to Vodafone subscribers as they provide us with the data to identify the caller's location accurately and so make the information as locally relevant as possible.
All the other services (401100, 64644) carry the same traffic information but without the ability to tailor it to the caller's immediate locality.
All of these services are now premium rate, so are charged at least 60p per minute, although different service providers' charges may vary.
One downside of the introduction of the Precision Traffic service is that we have sadly had to discontinue the subscription based '0845-TRAFFIC' service.
Hope that helps!

[FAO Site admins] keepmoving.co.uk - Invalid Hostname?
This isn't applicable to any particular road, but I had to choose one! (sorry about that)
I've noticed for a long while now, the CNAME www.keepmoving.co.uk works as expected, but http://keepmoving.co.uk (no www.) resolves to "Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)". There's no real reason for this even, a 301 Redirect could point to the www. Hostname and it'd improve Google rank too to have proper canonical hostnames.
Can I suggest this as a possible improvement? C'mon guys, there's no reason to not have keepmoving.co.uk set up to listen for requests without the www. CNAME. :)

Re: Why no mention of 3 mile contraflow?
Hi richardl,
The works you saw around Membury are being reported on the site, but their apparent absence may be due to the way incidents like this are reported by automated systems.
As you say, a contraflow by its nature affects traffic flowing in both directions, which is true for a number of types of report particularly weather. These 'bidirectional' messages are treated as a single incident affecting both directions of travel. The problem for showing this on our stripmaps is that the message only appears in one direction, with the opposite carriageway effect implied. This does have the positive effect of making the maps less cluttered and allowing more significant incidents to stand out. Any associated queues or delays will be reported on the side affected, but to be sure of picking up all of our reports it's best to check both directions of travel.
Your report of the works taking place at J11 has been passed back to our traffic reporters, and should appear on the site soon.

Re: Miles of M25
Hi, Thanks for your comment.
There are some inaccuracies in the way our database calculates road lengths, and these particularly show up on circular routes, for which our apologies.
The actual length of the M25 is around 117 miles, but Dartford and Purfleet are obviously only a few miles apart as the crow flies, and this is the disparity which causes the calculation to go wrong in this instance.
The majority of road length calculations are pretty accurate, as these approximate to the straight line distance, but if you see any others which seem wide of the mark please let us know.

Derby To Thorpe Park
Hi
I am planning on travelling to thorpe park a week on thursday at 6am and was wanting to know which would be the best way to get there? I have the option of either the M1 or the M40 to get to the M25.
Obviously the M1 is a more direct route but involves more time spent on the M25 at around 8:30am whilst the M40 avoids the majority of the M25.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Trips around Dorset
Hi there. This is most likely due to the way our delay data is compiled.
Our delay information is gathered from real journey times reported by probe vehicles carrying GPS units; as they progress on their journey the time taken to travel their route is continually compared against the expected time for that section of road. Any difference detected is then reported as a delay.
Once a road is closed, no vehicles are able to travel and no delay information is received or published for that route. Instead, a report of the road being closed is published against that section.
We are currently not able to publish suggested alternative routes together with a delay relative to taking the more direct journey, but the easiest way to make the comparison for yourself is to trawl other local routes using the 'search for traffic' link.
Hope that helps!

Reporting a problem by Text
Hello,
Why is there no facility to report a jam by text or on the keepmoving/mobile website (obviously, pulling over at a safe place to do so)? Few mobile phone companies will charge the BT rate you quote of 3.95p per minute to report a problem which is probably putting people off reporting hold-ups. And I imagine few people are thinking about reporting on their journey by the time they get home to their BT line.
Thanks

Re: Creating Routes
Thank you for your comment. Currently it is not possible to choose your exact route yourself.
It seems that all routing engines will choose the M56/A556/A56 route to get from Manchester to the M6. However to force the engine to use the M62, start from Salford. Then put in Cirencester as a via point which will then correct the route at the end.
In most cases the routing engine returns the right route, but as routing, by it's very nature, is highly personal, it can be a case of trial and error before you get it right. We hope this advice helps with your journey.
Have a safe journey!

fog / high intensity lights / indicators
Is there some new members only club that requires its drivers to drive with their front fog lights on all the time? Is it supposed to look "cool". I'm sick to death of being blinded by *****s who drive in wet conditions on dark roads with headlights and fog lights on. Headlights dip. Fog lights don't. The Highway Code gives useful guidance on the use of front and rear fog lights, and it's about time that drivers took a look at it.
And whilst I'm ranting, isn't correct use of indicators taught in driving lessons any more? This seems to be a particular fault of BMW drivers. When I was receiving instruction prior to taking the IAM driving test, I was advised that 4 seconds of indication in a motorway / dual carriageway overtaking manoeuvre should be adopted. Trust me; that's more than one flash of an indicator!

SatNavs
Despite the reports of HGVs going down farm roads, cars ending on top of pigsties, more and more drivers are depending on these 'aids'. Those who become reliant upon them will get more and more frustrated with the results. No SatNav is completely reliable.
Good maps are much better for routing and for finding alternatives when necessary. And my experience is that SatNavs can lead you down one way roads the wrong way, tell you to turn right where right turns are expressly forbidden, make unnecessary detours, pick longer routes and most dangerous of all distract drivers.
So I like to have some fun with the installed SatNav in my car. I let it set the route, but take my own route and listen to my wife telling me where it 'thinks' I should be going and how I should turn off to rejoin the set route. Heigh ho and away to go; best in car game I've ever come across, especially when that disembodied female voice keeps repeating new directions that could be so costly in fuel!!

Re: Why no reports?
Hi Millennia, I'm sorry the information you received did not match your experience. This may be due to the way your route is set up as well as some of our rules for how we report delays. We did report the overturned lorry and closure of the M4 between J26 and J24 from before 6am and these reports should have continued right through the morning.
Our policy is not to report delays affecting closed stretches of road, as traffic may remain trapped for a long period of time unrelated to measured road speed. Police advice was not to join the motorway after J28, so no delays were reported after this point.
We were reporting the delays affecting the stretch between J30-J28 approaching the closure, although this may not be on your daily route. We did record extensive delays on the A48 around Newport, but again these would not be reported if that road is not part of your route. I'm surprised you didn't see the reports of the closure, but this may be due to which junction where you exit

Hi there,
We can confirm the motorway was closed southbound at junction 4 after a lorry overturned at around 4am this morning.
All Southbound traffic is currently being taken off the main carriageway and diverted via the slip roads and the roundabout at Handy Cross.
The latest information we have is that the Highways Agency hope to have the motorway re-opened by mid-afternoon, so all should be back to normal for evening rush-hour, but there will be additional traffic affecting the junction in the meantime.

NO Warning!
The A505 was closed at the tunnel section at Bladock in BOTH directions. I went through it at 0603 this AM, and there was no advance warning at all - Nealry crashed through the Road Closed Signs. Nothing on the radio, no other advance warnings, and no assistance as to how to get around the diversion. If You didn't have SatNav, you'd have been royally stuffed.
Farce.
PS Why this routing algorithm refuses to let me join the M25 from the A1M directly, Ijust don't understand. It seems obsessed with taking me round the A405 /A414, which is not the quickest even if the shortest....
PPS how crazy are we to be joining near-stationary traffic on the A1 going south at Welwyn at 06:10 every day? Why do we bother? my average journey time is 2.5 hours for 76 miles....

Re: LPG
Our fuel price comparisons are updated regularly overnight from data made available to us by the petrol retail industry.
As yet, the number of outlets for LPG are far less numerous than for petrol/diesel products, so for many route requests there would simply be no data to return.
As a result we currently have no plans to include prices for LPG in our comparisons, and the number of outlets would need to increase significantly before we would consider taking steps to do so.

Snow on road
Things were slow today, because of the road surface - combination of compressed snow and ice, not a lot of evidence of gritting since the snow fell last night. On road between Kessock Bridge and Tore roundabout, average speed was 20-30 mph. Things got a lot better from Tore northwards

Why no reports?
I don't understand - the route eastbound on the M4 in S Wales is shown as quiet with nothing happening and yet it is carnage out there. A lorry crash blocked the Brynglas tunnel this morning and traffic was diverted off the M4 and gridlocked the whole of Newport. The A48 alternate route through Newport eastbound is still solid as a result of this - I'm amazed there have been no reports on this section and my set route through this is marked as clear.

I want to set up a route, going from M40 Junc.15 to Nuneaton, I want to go up the A46 untill I hit the ringroad at Stonebridge HWY and instead of going straight over onto the A444 I want to go right onto the A45 then A46, Hit the M6 Junc2 and come of at M6 Junc 3 or is it better to go straight through on A444 ?
Thanks for your time

Re: Audio report for pre-set routes
Hi
You're quite right in that this is a commercial service designed to generate revenue, but the removal of the routes feature has nothing to do with this.
We created the route specific feature a couple of years ago and we only generated a small number of users. The ability to edit or create a new route via the website (and listen to it through the phone service) has been unavailable for 18 months now - although it continued to remain in place on the phone line for those who set up a route beforehand. As you may have noticed, we have entered a partnership to provide this service to the RAC. It wasn't possible to offer the original web based sign up via the RAC website and so this left us with an RAC branded service offering journey specific traffic which new callers could not benefit from. We therefore had no choice but to remove the feature.
I do apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. We'll be reviewing the functionality in the New Year and we hope to offer an alter

Re: Journey time
Hi there,
Having consulted our database of expected journey times, it suggests that 40 minutes might be a more realistic timing for this journey, assuming you stick to the main A13 and A12, but with regular delays of 15-20 minutes expected in the morning peak and 10-15 minutes in the evening, so it may be best to allow an hour for the commute to be on the safe side until you become more familiar with the traffic flows.
Hope that helps!

Re: Information For My Journey To Work
Thank you both for your comments, and for all those others who have raised queries about 'Option 2'
Regretfully, we have taken the decision to remove this option from our services. Analysis showed that it was not being taken up by many callers to the service, and the decision was taken to shorten the introductory menus by removing it. This change is gradually being introduced across all of our phone services.
The option to hear traffic local to your locaton is still available by pressing 'Option 3' on most services, although technical reasons mean we unfortunately cannot offer this on the 0845-TRAFFIC service.
Whilst apologising for the inconvenience, we trust you will find that these changes do not detract from the overall usefulness of the service

Hi
I currently live in Rainham, Essex and have been offered a job in Hackney. Maps show its only about 15 mile and 30 minutes, but can anyone tell me what the real journey times on A13 will be if I leave at 7.30 in the morning from Rainham. And what to head back this way from Hackney at 5pm. Thanks

Re: Email alert time
That's pretty much the option we would recommend!
Because of the large volume of mails and alerts processed each day, they are sent out in batches at approximately 20-minute intervals; so your set routes will be scanned for delays and incidents present at around that time. This also gives you the option of setting off early if a delay is detected on your route.

work2home service
Hi,
I have tried e-mailing keep moving but to no avail.
I have a 130 mile journey to work and really valued the 'work2home' service via my mobile on 64644 and dialing 2. I was surprised to learn by default that is was no longer available and without any prior notification.
The alternative of calling up all of the roads on route is time consuming, expensive and potentially unsafe if users are wrongly tempted to try whilst driving.
I know many people who used the service and remain surprised and sceptical about its apparent unpopularity. I found out about the service through 'word of mouth', as did all of my friends and colleagues. If the service was reactivated and advertised on your website even at a higher call charge, perhaps more people might use it?
If the service is no longer to be made available then frankly it is cheaper to resort to competitor services
Thanks

Ideally I'd get the email alert or SMS just a few minutes before I'm about to leave, with the latest information. But currently, I get them about 30 minutes before. Audio report for pre-set routes
I am going to state that the single most useful area of your services has been removed by not allowing us to dial in and check our preset route. This I suspect is simply because you make more money by keeping us on the phone longer than the 10 secs to be told our route is clear when we dial in and press "2". Clearly its in your interest for us to have to keep on the phone for ages to check road by road, listen to the entire length of that motorway before getting to the relevant bit too.
I dont believe you that it was because of small numbers of users - I believe you are simply generating income.
Please reinstate it, it was the most useful traffic service out there. Now you are not.

Re: Missing Road - A6044 (Agecroft Road)
Hi Kev,
The reason for this is that the road listings on KeepMoving are limited to those routes for which we publish delays, and this stretch of the A6044 is not currently included, although we do reporting any major traffic incidents and accidents which affect it.
There are a number of reasons why a route might not be covered, including its strategic importance, levels of vehicle flow, and demand for information.
Ultimately we aim to cover all A-roads, and new ones are added at regular intervals. The next update is due later this year, but I can’t promise the A6044 will be included at that stage.
In the meantime, depending on the exact route you follow, you should be able to select any of the A56 Bury New Road, A665 Bury Old Road or A576 Middleton Road, which may produce a route closer to the one you follow.
Hope that helps!

Bad congestion A47 at Honingham both ways for construction of roundabout at the Mattishall Road turning, delays of up to 20 minutes. One lane closed and 24 hour traffic lights in operation scheduled to continue until 06.00 hours Monday morning. Thie situation is made worse by ice and snow on the road. I wonder how many times
I have e-mailed and put posts on here several times that the long-term roadworks that Keep Moving states are on the A47 at New Costessey are in fact at Honingham a few miles to the west. There is no way to enter this correct location. This week we are to see at 8 am this Thursday traffic lights on this busy road 24 hours a day until 6 am Monday morning at the moment they are there just at night from 8 pm to 6 am.
This damn stupid wrong location is as much good to drivers as a chocolate fire guard, , maybe this info will be more helpful.

Wrong location
I see that the location for the roadworks is still wrong despite being told it would be corrected asap by an administrator on October 14th. If any notice is to be taken of these roadworks warnings by the public surely it is essential that the correct location is given both in the heading and on the map, both are wrong by a few miles.
For information of those that are interested the location of the Mattishall Road Roundabout construction is at Honingham not New Costessey and applies to both eastbound and westbound traffic.

Contraflow should apply to both directions
There is a contraflow indicated for the M4 Westbound between J13 and 14, this should be duplicated for the Eastbound direction as it has the same speed restriction of 50mph.
Shouldn't this be done automagically for contraflow situations as they are going to have the same effects on both sides of the carriageway?

Re: special incident broadcasts
Hi,
Thank you for your comment.
The functionality of the Road option has been changed recently to automatically include any special incident broadcasts or eyewitness reports, this was done in order to reduce the number of key presses required per call; and increase the hands-free nature of the service. Pressing 1 will now skip the message, rather than playing it. The call prompts have been changed to inform of this change, but we apologise if you missed these changes. The Route and Locality options are also due to be updated in the near future. If this is not the cause of your confusion, please contact us directly at info@keepmoving.co.uk and we can investigate the matter further.

Timescales and delays
My route takes in the A1198, A505, A1, M25 and M4. The 76-mile route I set up has a normal journey time of 1h 38m. This is 'optimistic' to say the least, as during the 3h 'rush-hour' I've never achieved it in less than 2h, often longer. There are 'Centipede' stop-Timescales and delayss on the A1 and M25 each and every day for 10-15 mile sections of both these roads, but these conditions are never indicated on the website. I'm just of the opinion that the route timings for these overloaded roads should realistically reflect average timings during the business day, rather than at 04.00, at which time the stated duration is theoretically possible!
I wonder if users do phone in these delays and if they are noted, or if not would it help the routing algorithm if we did regularly report the delays?
Thx

The 2020 serviceseems to be tempremental whereby the 'special incident broadcasts' which follow the incident summary cant always be called up by dailing '1' at the end of the summary. If you are 1 picosecond slow or 1 pico second too quick, it doesnt bring the special incident up.

Wrong location
I have reported this before but nothing appears to get done to correct this. The roadworks for roundabout construction at the Mattishall Road junction on the A47 is not at New Costessey but at Honingham. The location as depicted is even incorrect on the map as the correct location is to the west of Easton not to the east of it. It seems pointless putting up traffic information and indicators on a map if they are at least 5 miles out. A check on multimap or streetmap will show Honingham clearly as being nowhere near New Costessey. Even my earlier e-mail I sent was totally ignored makes one wonder how much more information on this site is as inaccurate at this is.
The roadworks affect both east and westbound as this is a single carriageway road.

Agree with you. My normal rote to and from work is fine (Chester to Prescot via Runcorn bridge)
However when setting up alternatives due to very nasty roadworks on bridge, I wanted route via M56, M6 thelwall and along M62. It will insist on taking me off the M6 and back on again at one junction and I can't get it to stop. I think its the A57 but I can't go back into my route as the info button doesn't work.

setting vias
This site is very nearly very useful. The details that stop it being useful for me are:
i) Creating routes is really a bit slow. This maybe wouldn't be such a big problem if there was a useful progress indication so you could tell whether it was still working or whether it, or the connection to it, had died.
ii) More seriously, it is really rather difficult to get it to take the route that you really want.
While the routing algorithm does seem to find a reasonable, best-guess, route, one of the uses I have for this, rather than say, a Sat Nav, is that you can use it compare the 'default' route with a nominally slightly worse route which is less susceptible to delays. The trouble is that the routing interface makes this hard.
In my case, I was trying to route from Melbourn to the NEC. Its choice of routing, via the M11/A14/M6 would be my normal preference, but it is a route very susceptible to delays, so the point was to examine alternatives.
An alternative, A1198/A428/

Re: Still Censored
I'm not so sure the problems with the camera feeds are down to the HA, as normally (with www.trafficScotland.org anyway) they would replace the feed with a "Currently Unavailable" image due to roadworks/site changes etc or "In Operational Use" image If the camera images are subject to any legal issues for example, the scene of an accident etc.

Waste of time
I joined today as I thought it would be very handy to plan a route and also see the routes I was going to travel so as to avoide things as road works.
I have been on every area and nearly every camera in every area tonight and they are all blank. What I thought would be an excellent site is a waste of time. I can get a route planner anywhere, but to see the roads before you leave would have been a big advantage to stop me adding to the congestion.
I appreciate the Highways operate the cameras, but come on it needs Keep Moving to take them to task on this, the whole thing comes out of the taxpayers money, we want to avoide giving them further congestion, so play the game and turn the flaming cameras on. I dont know why they say that in bad weather they turn them off, that is just the time you need to see the damn thing.
I hate to say this but if this is what it is normally like then this will prob be my last visit

Cameras
How come other sites e.g. BBC are still showing working camera pictures when their feeds come from the same source as Keep Moving's? I suspect other issues are the cause.

slightly disapointed
Guy - sort the site out.
It seemed a great idea - I checked it out, the CCTV was looking good and I could actually check out J27 before I got onto it to see if I was going to be delayed (more and more common these days with 'nose-to-tail driving' at 90mph) .
Disapointingly eveythings down - again.
I'll try a few more times over the next few days, then un-subscribe.
Shame !

Signs said Road Closed from Monday to Friday
On Friday while travelling west on this road at around 5pm, the signs erected said that this road would be closed in both directions "from Monday to Friday". We travelled this route today (Sunday) at around 6pm only to find that the road had been closed a day earlier than stated. Had to divert all the way back to Balloch to follow the diversion signs - what a waste of time and diesel.

No delays on this road?????
Awful roadworks closed 2 lanes of this road on the approach to the runcorn bridge. These are non-peak (!!!) works between 9am and 4pm Tues, Weds and Thurs for the next 4 weeks. A normal journey of 35mins took me 1hr 20 minutes last night when I left work (Prescot) at 3pm.
Avoid this journey at all costs as there is total gridlock in Widnes. How 4 o'clock is classed as non-peak on this key route is beyond me

useless route finder!
further to my (ignored) complaint that your route finder is determined to send me 20 miles out of my way on my 12 mile trip to work, I have tried to get it to recognise that the best (or is it? - the **** thing won't let me find out!) way to birmingham uni from stafford is straight down the m6. it insists on sending me dowm the m5 even if I ask it to go via the a38m. I'm sure this site is great for some folk - london & home counties????, but for staffordshire, it's ****.

Re: useless route finder!
Hi
Firstly we aim to respond to queries as soon as possible so we are sorry if you feel you were ignored.
The routing engine we use works well for most people, but inevitably some people's routes differ from what the routing engine considers the most direct. To ensure that our members are able to save the route they want, we have put in the option of via points. We find this works well in most cases.
Please email us - mary@keepmoving.co.uk and we'll do our best to assist you.
Best wishes

A12 delays 7th September
The VMS signs have A12 delays 7th Septembered to display the message (or something similar)
A12 J17 - J29
Delays
Sunday 7th September
It doesn't say what might be causing the delay, obviously not a 20 mile / 24 hr roadwork marathon. Anyone any ideas? My best guess is an abnormal load but I can't find any info on it.
Ta.

Average speed
Is anybody else fed up with this '30' average speed limit on the A316 between Sunbury Cross and Apex corner. I know I am. I stick to the 30mph because firstly I know it is for the safety of the men working on the road, but secondly I do not want a fine and possible points on my license.
Is my speedometer not working correctly! as I find a lots of cars, vans and bikes pass me doing a fair speed. Are they not afraid or are the cameras not working? Does anybody know?
I was coming home last night 'Southbound' around 9pm, hardly any traffic on that stretch. Nobody working on the road. I could have done with knowing if I could have travelled faster than '30'.
I would appreciate a reply from anybody with any experience. Or even somebody that has been caught going over the limit.
Thanks
Jenn

Re: new camera site
Hi,
The CCTV is a great addition to our site, provided courtesy of the Highways Agency, and we hope you find it interesting. Unfortunately there are a number of factors which may result in the cameras being unavailable or switched off. For example, major roadworks may eliminate cameras for a whole stretch, or a serious incident may lead to the cameras being unavailable for a specific location.
Today there have been a higher number of incidents than usual due to the severe weather; so with a higher number of incidents, a higher number of cameras will be unavailable as a result. Whilst many cameras will be available at times, it is beyond our control so the level of availability will fluctuate.
We hope you're able to view more of the cameras when you check
